Kokekuma is a physical manifestation of the Kodama, a condensation of spiritual power which garners over time in ancient forests and trees which remain untouched for hundreds of years, directly living within the bark of the trees. Due to the age of the forest, the forest has reclaimed enough energy to show its true form, a small faintly humanoid being, about 50cm in height made completely of moss, grass and twigs. Its name comes from its appearance, being a creature of moss, believed to slightly look like a bear - granting the name โKokekumaโ or โMoss bearโ.
The materialisation of a Kodama is no coincidence, its the result of hundreds of years of untouched forest creating bountiful land for wildlife and plants to prosper, and Kokekuma was born from the forestโs spiritual energy condensing, first from orbs of light when the Kodama was weaker, to the physical formation of Kokekuma itself.
Based on a spirit that protects the forest and those who respect it, Kokekuma is a Kodama which will protect the southern forests, bringing prosperity to the land it resides in and preventing the wildlife from coming to harm. Its life form is sustained by the trees in the forest, and carving/cutting trees will cause the bark to seep with blood; upsetting the Kokekuma. Cutting down a tree will have severe adverse effects for the individuals responsible.
Kokekuma itself is shy, it will hardly reveal itself to passersby, though seems to be more comfortable with younger children, and has previously been rumored that it will play with children who wander into the forest late at night, to prevent them from being scared; its orbs of light shining the way home for them. Though the energy of the Kodama is felt heavily throughout the forest, and in the air and humidity. It is thought that the lighter the air, the happier the yokai, when a tree is felled, the air grows heavy and soils murkier than usual.
Strengths & Weaknesses:
Strengths
Bountiful Lands: Those who appease the Kodama will find that their garden is more lush, crops more ripe and land is less likely to spoil.
Strength in numbers: The mycelium network hears what happens within the forest, and can spread warning messages to the Kodama if individuals seek to bring disaster to the forest.
Physical manifestation: The Kodama can make itself known to individuals, though is not fond of doing so, unless creating floating golden-green light orbs within the forest.
Weaknesses
Physical ties to the world: if the trees the Kodama sources its life from are destroyed, it will experience Soul-Death and cease to exist.
No direct self-defense: while no harm will come to an individual directly felling the forest, apart from seeing the wood of trees bleed, individuals will not die from causing harm to the forest, though may (if untreated) succumb to the forestโs curse.
Fire & flammable : If a fire were to break out, it could easily damage the Kodamaโs trees and cause it to experience Soul-Death
Soul-Death Mechanics:
Soul-Death is the process of a spirit ceasing to exist, this could be for various reasons: in the Kodamaโs case, it could be due to physical destruction, absorption by a higher spirit or kami, though they must have IC reasoning to be able to absorb a lesser spirit. Kami have the ability to devour or obliterate souls at whim, and are feared by the lesser spirits. Benevolent spirits are more likely to hinder other spirits and absorb others.
Curse & Blessing Methods
Blessings:
Bountiful Lands: when honored through prayers, restorative actions (replanting trees and native plants) or other physical gestures (such as placing a shimenawa around a tree belonging to the Kodama)
Protection of the forest: Individuals who honor the forest (actions similar to above) never seem to get lost, the greenery seems to be clearer and less confusing, and glowing golden-green orbs light the way for these individuals to safely traverse the forest.
Curses:
Returning to the forest, to repay debts: When a tree is felled or carved, or the natural order of the forest is disrupted - individuals begin to feel strange, their fingers will begin to become numb, and then the skin will tint green at the tips, slowly spreading throughout the body as it begins to actively decay. The process takes months, and is easily prevented & stopped, but the damage is irreversible.
Prevention 1: Man-made intervention, the affected area is amputated, the curse is severed from the body and can no longer spread.
Prevention 2: Appeasing the Kodama, an offering is made to ask for forgiveness (replanting trees, wildflowers or offering food with prayers) the curse is halted in its track, but the individual is left with nerve problems and green tinted skin where affected, as a memory of their transgressions against the forest.
Warding & Invoking Methods
The Kodama is typically repelled by physical threats (the visible affects of the Kodama's presence will be dimmed) by physical threats, this can be from fire or natural disasters like earthquakes, which cause the Kodama to appear to 'hide'.
The Kodama can be invoked through offerings (replenishing wildlife, physical offerings and prayers) and will provide blessings to those who take care of it, though it can also be invoked through 'sins' such as carving names into trees, cutting down trees, digging up flowers and similar actions.
Yokai Description:
The Kodama resides within the trees of the forest and does not โappearโ by itself, though trees where a Kodama resides will bleed when carved/cut. The Kodama may use its power to manifest as golden-green orbs of light, often to guide people or appear when a blessing is performed.
Kokekuma is the physical manifestation of the Kodama, a small creature, similar to a bear cub which is made out of moss, rocks, mushrooms, grass and leaves. Barely reaching 50cm tall, it blends in seamlessly with the surrounding forest, using bones from carcasses of past animals to create a fragmented mask to appear more soothing to young children who may become lost in the forest. Itโs highly shy and easy to scare, often hiding under bushes and mounds of dirt and moss.
The Kodama itself is kind in nature, welcoming to those exploring the forest with good intent, and happy to bestow blessings of good land to those who honor it kindly. This is seen by the presence of its orbs in the area, and often on the farmland of those who honor it. The physical manifestation is rare to see, as most could consider it to be 'shy', spending most of its time hibernating beneath the forest floor.
