Whatโs your IGN?: ThatBurningFox
What's your Discord Tag?: therealburningfox
Do you have any alternative accounts?: Only one; Sunbright97
Do you have a functioning microphone?: Yes, though I don't tend to use it much. I can if it's necessary, but I would prefer to limit myself to text based communication where possible for comfort sake. Verbal communication tends to distract me from writing and roleplaying.
How old are you?: Over 20.
Have you worked in teams like this before?: I've been a part of a moderation team across several different servers and communities with the goal of creating solid foundations for worlds and the respective settings of the story, as well as helping with running events. For example, I did my own flash events on Garry's Mod RP servers! However, a dedicated writing team is something I am not personally versed in. I would still say that I have plenty of experience in working with teams in general though!
Do you have any previous experience?: As mentioned above, I have quite a history across several servers and communities. I have been roleplaying for a long time and been a part of smaller teams that created and ran experiences for a modest community of under 30 players, as well as briefly part of a larger team that handled a decent 90 active players on the regular. My contributions were mainly in providing assistance with playing NPC characters for the sake of events, or coming up with setting specific lore. One of my most prominent examples that comes to mind is my creation of an entire city, which was named and given its unique lore for the setting. It acted as a landmark for players to look into and interact with, while also adding a ton of context to a certain GM character's history and motivations to boot!
What do you believe is your writing strong suit?: I believe that I am very capable of writing intense scenarios; namely fight scenes and all the build-up surrounding those types of things, as well as creating characters that are decently interesting and provoke people who interact with them to want to find out more about their histories. Every word, every movement, I tend to think out in a specific mental zone to convey a believable and grounded person for the setting they are placed within. Adaptability with my writing is as a result something I consider myself skilled at, with an ability to create empathy in people that engage with the things I create. I always like to think of a 'why', a motive, behind each and every thing. Why someone might be angry all of the time, why someone ended up the way they are, all of those things.
Cause and effect is something I love to deep dive into. Point A to point B. It's all well and good to have a ruined building, but why is that building ruined? Who did it and for what purpose? From the way the markings in the walls look, to how broken glass falls into place, you can tell a story through that building's description alone. Things like jagged scratch marks and messy, barely legible graffiti convey a story of someone who has lost their wits and left a harrowing warning for the unfortunate soul that stumbled upon it. There are so many ways you can approach the same prompt and give it life, reason, while also doing more showing than outright telling.
Letting people connect the dots themselves and come up with their own theories is a wonderful way to create engagement, driving them to seek out more. I believe I can do a decent job of that when I'm in my element!
Why are you interested in joining the Lore Team?: My interest lies in the lore team in particular because of the ability to contribute to the actual history of the server. An ability for myself to leave my own mark as well as help other players do exactly that is a very delightful prospect to me and I would be very happy to be able to do exactly that. Writing as a whole is something I find a great deal of fun in, especially connecting dots and putting pieces of a puzzle together for the lore of a character or place. Admittedly, running events and creating memorable experiences is one of the biggest parts of the team that has me interested - from the smaller, more wholesome interactions in the day to day, to the flashy and grim character shaping moments. It would be a perfect place to contribute and assist with creating a story and I would love to help other players achieve that too, where possible within our guidelines, of course.
How did you learn about the server?: I found out about the server by checking out a certain person's discord biography out of curiosity and saw "YRP" mentioned within it. From there, I looked into Yurei-Jima and found the YouTube videos, which led me right to the forum by a stroke of some odd luck.
What unique contributions can you bring to the server?: I consider myself quite passionate about the significance of Japanese customs and the general way they shape people to behave, as well as how it reflects upon the country as a whole. As a result, I intend to do research and work with the team to further build the very foundation of Yurei-Jima in a way that feels natural and respectful of the established setting, with my drive for helping create an everchanging narrative prevalent in helping the server feel more alive and dynamic. I believe I would be able to contribute with solid, believable lore and events that would enrich the experience for players within the setting of the island with all of its folklore and intrigue. I would love to be able to start off rumours ICly that could have any player latch on and follow the bread crumbs I leave around to piece together an overarching picture or story. My main philosophy would be to reward engagement and interest, where if people are willing to put in the effort and really look into things, they'll naturally unearth more of the stuff they're trying so hard to understand. I would like to be engaged with the common player as much as possible, from supernatural rumours or whispers, to even just general environmental storytelling and flash events. I believe I'd bring plenty of unique ideas, as well as a stronger sense of presence!
Write a short story of a Self-Made Yokai you can find roaming throughout the island: Amidst the more negative inclined spirits that roam the island like harmful oni, vengeful yurei, or the mischievous kappa, there do exist yลkai that hold less of a hostile nature toward humans...
One such case is called "Mizuki-Hato", a mysterious entity that presents themselves as a turtle dove with brilliant white feathers that illuminate as though under the grace of moonlight, faint outlines of moonglow tracing over the worn, old, yet beautiful wings. Youths that have ended up in dangerous situations or paths have reported hearing the soft whispers of a voice, silken smooth, barely audible over even the faintest of gusts of wind, yet firm enough to be perceived. The voice supposedly provided warning or guidance to help those away from harm or bad decisions, acting as a watchful protector spirit, carrying a solemn tone amidst those whispers as though well versed in tragedy.
A particular instance of this yลkai that earned some wariness, however, is a case where a student got trapped in the mountains during a particularly bad blizzard. Supposedly, the yลkai appeared in their "true form", a figure of a ghastly elderly woman with gleaming golden eyes. In this state, the spirit provided warmth in an embrace to see the lost one through the harsh night... Yet when morning came, the harrowing whispers betrayed their usual disposition, urging the student to not "leave them again", to "stay for a bit longer", leading to a belief that the spirit is a lost soul of a mother that had perished many, many years ago. Whether or not this over-attachment could lead to the spirit turning hostile is yet to be observed in any account, though if ever you feel the watchful gaze of the turtle dove, heed their warning...
But avoid getting too close, lest you risk angering the unfortunate soul.
Write a quick event based on Japanese pop-up cafes/restaurants/stores (Promotional cafes based on media such as anime, gaming, spirits, etc.):
With the surging popularity of the anime, 'Guardians of Paradise', a flash opening of a cafรฉ themed around it has been established in the nearby district, ___! Come by to see the shifting forms of the tables and chairs, built to mimic the sci-fi technology seen in the actual show, with delicious snacks themed after the Prio-Rations the titular characters indulge in before they climb into their battle suits and fight off those that would seek to destroy Paradise! Each meal purchase comes with an official 'Guardians of Paradise' five inch figurine modelled after the actual battle suits featured in the show! While the opening is taking place, tune into the soundtracks you know and love from the show with other likeminded fans and check out the central attraction - a real scale battle suit modelled after the protagonist, Chika Satou's own! Lock-in! Lock-on! Ready to defend! DEPLOY!
How would you write the atmosphere of the image provided below? (Byakuyakoku Shinto Monastery):
Upon arriving at the top of the steady ascent leading to the unnaturally gelid landscape, the view of a dated collection of traditional buildings met the visage of those that made that lengthy trek. Even among the bone chilling cold that permeated the area, a strange sense of warmth lingered in its midst, captivating those brave enough to visit one of the the strongest spiritual regions on the island home to many cryptic tales.
Despite what one would expect with all of the warnings and scares the locals impose upon those that may wish to visit the island, they would not be encroaching by visiting this area. In fact, the tidied snow and maintained greenery point to a simple truth that becomes apparent as you spend further time at the Monastery: It's very much made to be a welcoming place, similar in vein to those shrines that can be found back in the mainland. Furnished and looked after with tender care by capable hands, the gentle illuminating lanterns light the way to understanding; so long as one upholds respectful conduct and maintains careful awareness of traditions, they are free to remain in this landmark of historical prominence.
For those who are eager to learn more about the yลkai and all things spiritual that plague this island - the Byakuyakoku Monastery is actually the safest place to pursue such a matter... So long as the guidance of the priests and maidens is followed closely, that is. Even with the tender warmth and welcoming sensation the area brought by its nature, there always appears to be an unmistakable tension looming. As though one misstep is all it could take for dire consequences to befall poor unsuspecting individuals, the illuminating rays of the sun cast across the ancient wooden structures felt oddly oppressing.
One thing about the area is clear - the shrine staff will do everything they can to ensure you will be safe.
You have been tasked to write an in-lore influential character in the history of Norowarejima. Who and what would you create? Provide some insight on the character!: The island of Norowarejima is no stranger to those that tell tall tales of yลkai, yet one individual in particular stands out prominently amidst all those that spread those stories: Azuma Sakurai, better known by his pen-name, Ryushin. Many consider him an enigma, many more consider him downright insane, to the point that mentioning his name can earn quite the ire from the locals of the island. Hailing from Kamakura of the Kanagawa prefecture, Sakurai notably always had an interest in the supernatural following a near-death experience in his earlier years, where he fell from a significant height following a malfunction of a cable car he was in.
He survived the fall miraculously, suffering from severe shock. During his unconsciousness, he accounted visions of what he believed to be a zenko kitsune, attributing his exceptional good fortune to some sort of divine blessing received from it and fixating upon it.
Unlike most that would simply move on with their lives following such a thing, he developed an unhealthy obsession with the occult following his vision, digging into folklore and other tales deeper than any around his time did. As the years passed, the interest only solidified following him catching wind of an island that was supposedly home to elevated spiritual activity, leading to him making a move there in an effort to encounter more of the supernatural, a twisted belief imparted upon his mind that he had to see more to attain some degree of understanding or enlightenment.
Those that knew him were wary of his instability and tendency to look much too deeply into the unknown, the things that humans should probably not try to understand - yet he pushed, further and further, day by day, to achieve that understanding that he sought. Most notably, he saw to seeking out the spirits around the island, documenting his encounters in a book. Unfortunately for the locals and naturally himself, his methods were not particularly cautious. Instead, he actively aimed to draw spirits out by whatever means he could, whether that meant offerings or even doing things the spirits supposedly did not like, he attempted to push the limits to achieve an understanding of all those beings that were greater than him.
Knowledge comes with its price, however, especially in the quantities that he sought out. Inevitable it was that he would descend further into irrationality, with few tales of his making proper sense as the passage of time were unkind to him. Even so, were it just his own undoing, his name would not carry quite a significance: It's believed that his endeavours served to freeze over the mountains, ruining the natural beauty as a punishment for his incessant behaviours and the lack of response from the others that could have stopped him in his tracks.
Regrettably, confirming if he was truly responsible was impossible, however - as following the unnatural flash freezing of the mountainside, Sakurai had vanished from Norowarejima entirely with not a trace. It's unknown if he died in the freeze and simply was never found, or some other outcome came to him. Regardless of such a fact, his infamy persists to this day, leading to an extreme stigma to those that dare to look too deeply into the unnatural...
Those that fall into a state of obsession of the supernatural are thusly stated to have "Ryushin-syndrome".
