The fictional diary below is based on a real voyage of Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld in 1879. Many details are changed to fit the narrative of this Yokai.
2/9/1879
I believe us to be the first ship that has navigated through the Eurasian continent. It has been 2 long years, ten months of which we spent trapped in the godforsaken Ice passage.
Our timing was fortuitous. This island is undergoing a modernization, the so-called "Meiji Restoration", and their reception to our arrival is astounding hospitality. Many matters were discussed, one notable point I wish to record is that we are arranged to meet the Minister of Navy tomorrow. For now, me and the crew can finally sleep on bedding that does not rock every minute.
I have finally made it. I am certain this moment will go down in history as the start of a scientific era for this island.
3/9/1879
The ministry of Navy was keen to know about the voyage here, how Vega was able to mount itself past the ice blockages, along with miscellaneous navigational techniques I have employed.
To my displeasure, information about Russia have been requested of me. I have dismissed these sort of inquiries, they may infer the feasibility of sailing these uncharted coastlines by themselves. I am a man of science, not of strategic intelligence for geopolitical tensions. The only subjects of my interest are the geographical findings and scientific advances to advance mankind.
Back at my residence, the landlady and her many servants were quite eager for me to regale Vega's journey from my homeland. I indulged this request, however, mentions of the supernatural had come up that piqued my interest.
There is much folklore on this island, stories of spirits and never-seen before creatures of peculiar descriptions. While I believe this is nothing but hogwash, the certainty at which these claims are asserted intrigues me. I am certain there is a rational explanation for the odd phenomena explained to me, if time permits I shall investigate these stories for myself.
4/9/1879
OOC note: we are now derailing from historical events heavily! If any bit of this story intrigues you, I would recommend reading on Nordenskiöld's journey yourself
I was able to find time between visits with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs to investigate claims of amphibian-like creatures adorned with an indentation on their head filled with water. A "Kappa", as I was told.
I have been advised to bow at sighting of this creature in a manner that would make the Kappa spill water from its indentation. The Kappa is said to be in indentured servitude to those who defeat them. These sounds to be stories to keep children away from the woods and rivers. This is quite reminiscent of the Näkki that lures poor souls into the dark depths of the sea.
While I was unable to find the mythical creatures described to me, I came across a peculiar specimen. The creature is reminiscent of an oversized spider with biologically puzzling three legs and three green eyes. Its mode of mobility seems to be spurious hops with its front and hind legs.
Despite my arachnophobia, I have taken the specimen home and opted to call it Hämis, a juvenile way to call a spider rather than hämähäkki. The idea of sharing a room with an oversized purple spider is a terrifying notion, but I will need to ensure that this creature is kept with great care with my own eyes.
For the time being, I have enclosed it in an unused lantern glass. I will inspect this creature more tomorrow.
5/9/1879
The three-legged spider has escaped its enclosure. I am unsure how it has managed this, the lantern glass is left on a stable surface of my desk, there should be no crevice in which it can escape from.
Surprisingly, it has nested itself on my head. It doesn't seem to hook into my hair or scalp, but it shows great interest in climbing back atop of my head. Even more surprisingly, I am not shrieking like a banshee when this creature crawls on me. Perhaps it looks less like a spider than I had originally thought.
The thought of an actual spider still makes me feel like regurgitating my breakfast, but this creature seems to have grown on me throughout the day.
Today's plans is a festival held to celebrate our arrival. I left hämis in my room, enclosed in a lantern glass with two of my journals stacked atop.
6/9/1879
Hämis had inexplicably found its way into my head again. When I went to check its enclosure, I had found that the two journals on top of the enclosure had been neatly arranged back into my shelf. The glass lantern that is supposed to be trapping hämis is nowhere to be seen.
The only plausible explanation I can surmise is that a servant had invited themselves into my room and arranged my book into its shelf and took the unused glass lantern back. When I went to question the landlady of this matter, she is insistent that no one would enter my living quarters in the night. I presume shelied did not know either.
I will find somewhere else to stay by the next week. Someone must have broken into my room at late night, there is no other explanation.
I will have to prepare my belongings to find another estate for my tenure. My journals, wears,hämis, and my camera.
For the time being, I have implemented a few knots within the door handle to ensure no one can enter my living space. Ishould not took hämis off my head and trapped it under an oil lantern glass cover.
7/9/1879
I am writing under great distress. The enclosure hämis was in was once again inexplicably removed, the oil lantern cover had also disappeared. The knot on the door is still in tact, no one should have been able to find their way in without leaving a trace. Thankfully, my prized possessions hämis are safe. I will be residing with my crew in the shared living spaces for the time being.
9[The rest of the diary pages after this point are mindless ramblings about hämis, and his growing obsession with the creature. Might write the following entries if I make a Lore app!]6
Hämis is a NEUTRAL entity
───────── ౨ৎ ─────────
Strength and weaknesses
Hämis can only influence people and creatures that permits it to stay on their head. The process is gradual, and its host can choose to remove hämis at any time. Hämis is as fragile as a normal spider, one can easily dispatch of a hämis by stepping on it.
Soul Death
Despite not being part of the mortal realm, a spirit can undergo another (true) death from being consumed by another spirit, be banished, or exorcised. Soul death can be caused by a divine relic or cursed objects dependening on the alignment of your spirit.
Hämis would not undergo this procedure, as it is a monster than a spirit. It would instead be stepped on and die.
Curse and blessing methods
Hämis curses any creatures to unconditionally adore it after a prolonged period of being on their head. The time taken for this to take effect is dependent on the host's state. A maladjusted or unsound host would expedite the time for the infatuation of hämis to grow.
Warding and invoking method
In any areas that a common spider might nest itself in, you can find a hämis. There is no specific way of invoking hämis.
Hämis is vulnerable to everything a normal spider would be, any repellants that are effective on spiders are effective on hämis.
Yokai Description
Hämis is a spider-like creature with three green eyes and three legs. It moves around by hopping, the creature will try to climb to a human's head if given the chance.
Hämikset are friendly to humans, and would often linger around any hosts it comes across.
