Yokai Type & Lore:
What is a [your yokai]? Give us a summary of their origin, folklore basis, or your interpretation. Please clearly define if they intend to be benevolent or malevolent.

Hi-no-Kusa — “Flamegrass”, a malevolent spirit, although to those who he finds are kind to nature, he may RARELY become benevolent.
Hi-no-kusa is an Oni, his apperance is a bit odd towards what is normally seen... But perhaps he's just missing his mask?

? The yokai born of noble fire and servant seed... Born in the Edo Period, Into Wealth and Ruin ?

In the later years of the Edo period, when the air hung heavy with incense and silks rustled like whispers behind closed doors, a young heir named Tsukasa Renjirō lived. His family was among the landholding elite… wealthy, refined, and deeply superstitious. They owned sprawling rice paddies at the foot of a slumbering volcano, tended by generations of servants who were never truly seen. Among those servants was a girl named Oni, daughter of a family branded as cursed. They whispered that she had been born from the womb of a witch. Superstition kept her silent and out of sight, used for only the lowest of tasks… cleaning ash pits, collecting grave dust, scrubbing soot from incense burners. Renjirō, though raised to see the world through lacquered walls, noticed her. At first, it was her quietness. Then, she lingered in the garden longer than needed… Finally, it was the way she spoke! Hesitantly, but passionately… about plants? Plants of all things?! She told him she loved them more than people. “They feel through the earth,” she said. “They just grow.” He began sneaking away from his studies, from sword lessons, from ink-brushed obligations, to join her in the overgrown corners of the estate. She showed him how to split stems with his nails, how to bury dried seeds between rotting wood. She told him the names of weeds as though they were her family. In those moments, something took root in him, too.

They fell in love in the shadows of the estate, between the green things and the sacred fires. But peace does not bloom easily. Renjirō’s family discovered their bond and saw it as an omen of downfall… The noble heir in love with a cursed servant!? Unforgivable. They conspired in silence. But before they could act, a political enemy struck first. In one brutal night, assassins poisoned the wells, slaughtered his guards, and set fire to the estate.

The fire devoured everything. He ran through the blaze, calling for Oni. He found her beneath the garden arch, her arms around the roots of a cherry tree, trying to save it even as the flames took her hair. They died together… or should have. But something heard them. In that crucible of grief, betrayal, love, and fire, the earth cracked open. Ash and root intertwined. Renjirō’s body was never found. But weeks later, villagers whispered of a strange spirit walking the blackened land… half-burned, half-blooming. Flowers grew in his footsteps. Fires recoiled from his shadow. Those who harmed his family and lover were found burned alive. People began calling him:

He now haunts places touched by both love and loss, by betrayal and rebirth. He blesses those who nurture what was destroyed. He may curse those who kill growth for pride. They sometimes were seen wearing an Oni mask, the curse that was said to be one of his of his lover’s. He never speaks her name, but in every haunted field where he appears, one flower always blooms. The same weed Oni once told him was misunderstood, but medicinal. Torikabuto (鳥兜 — “Bird Helmet”)

Hi-no-Kusa’s folk tale teaches that Unacknowledged grief festers: When we suppress sorrow, betrayal, or guilt rather than tending to it, it takes root beneath the surface. One day, it will bloom in ways we cannot control… in rage, illness, curses, or inherited pain. This spirit that roams the land is the embodiment of something that won't give up. He suppresses anger. Perhaps one day he will finally forgive and let himself rest. (possibly) even find his ways of anger can suppress him and cool down, and return to stone, becoming benevolent. A possible small local deity with small blessings, making the land fill with life. Overgrowing and sharing health.

Strengths & Weaknesses:
Your powers should be balanced. Please list both advantages and clear limitations.

Emotional Affliction

  • His presence affects the mind and heart more than the body. Mortals around him may feel overwhelming guilt, longing, or nostalgia, sometimes so intense it disorients or incapacitates them. It can feel like their heart dropped. Unsure WHY they feel so cold yet hot on the outside. Those hiding grief or guilt are particularly vulnerable to hallucinations and emotional breakdowns in his presence.

Rebirth Resilience

  • Like the plants he embodies, he comes back stronger after loss. Even if physically harmed or “destroyed,” he often regrows over time. Injuries close with ivy. Missing limbs return as bark-covered or floral versions. The more tragedy in an area, the faster he regenerates

Unseen by the Unbroken

  • He is invisible to those who have never experienced deep emotional loss. Only mourners, the guilty, or spiritually attuned can fully perceive him, giving him a veil of safety in crowded places.
  • In the most RARE cases, it was said he could use the rain and with the flames that once consumed him, he could use lightning. It is unclear if truly possible.

Weakness

Emotional Anchoring

  • He is tied to the memory of Oni… his cursed lover. If someone presents proof of her peaceful rebirth or release, his power weakens significantly.
    - Speaking her name during a confrontation can cause him to hesitate or lose focus, forcing him to remember who he was.

Cold and Sterility

  • Extreme cold, salted earth, or spiritually sterilized ground (like purified temples or modern, emotionless cities) weaken him.
    - Without heat or fertile energy, his powers become sluggish, and his plant growth stunts. He may even turn to his stone form when cold. This causes him to avoid the Shrine Mountain due to snow.

Mirrors:

  • Seeing what he's become could even entirely change him, returning him to the earth? Back to stone? Or even making him benevolent..!

Soul-Death Mechanics:
Explain how the SOUL-DEATH system works, to show that you understand your yokai can be permanently shelved, exorcised, consumed, or obliterated.

From my understanding, no spirit is truly all-powerful. They are not “immortal” as soul-death means disappearing, as their physical form is gone. (Dead) Soul death is when they are truly gone and CANNOT return.

Curse & Blessing Methods
Explain how your yokai bestows blessings or inflicts curses upon a mortal soul. Describe the methods they use, the form these effects take, and the nature of the blessings or curses themselves.

If he is to bless anyone, it would be a mortal he’s taken a liking to, for which is a clean soul. Those who garden or are older. He often finds old women who are of clean souls to bless for longer life spans. His blessings can be for those with increased fertility and health. Possibly a one-time protection from a life-changing event. Although after that blessing, he cannot be seen by that soul anymore.

If he curses anyone, it has to be with good reason. A reason to him would be harming nature. He would have a specific curse that he casts on the worst of the worst. So he very rarely does this, as most wouldn’t dare harm nature in general.

“The Withering Grief” Curse

“You tried to bury the fire. Now feel it bloom in your lungs.”

The victim becomes haunted by invisible vines, creeping and coiling inside their chest, ribs, and throat. No one can see them… but the cursed feel them tug, tighten, bloom, and burn slowly. They begin coughing up soot-stained petals… sometimes wet, sometimes dry, sometimes charred. Their lungs feel heavy, as though filled with ash. Nightmares return nightly: always a burning home, a field of flowers catching fire, or someone screaming their name from a forest. Their nose may bleed as their health slows. Grief attaches to them unnaturally. people begin to avoid them, feel uneasy, or weep around them without knowing why. In mirrors, they might catch glimpses of vines writhing under their skin. Especially near the neck or sternum. Burn marks will appear on the body

Emotional Effect:

  • The curse starts to forget joyful memories, especially those tied to family or love. These moments are replaced by twisted versions, or simply burned away.
  • They become consumed with an emotional hollowness—desperate to fix something, but unable to remember what was lost. They may relive Hi-no-Kusa’s memories as if they were their own, confusing their identity over time.

Warding & Invoking Methods
Yokai can be repelled by rituals, sacred objects, talismans, or prayers. Likewise, they can be summoned. Describe how your yokai might be warded against or invoked.
[!] The information on how to summon him is quite unknown, but using some knowledge, you could attempt your own summoning ritual. Such as using items that relate. Although not sure why you would ever want to ever summon... Him [!]
  • A lock of hair or something beloved (from the summoner or the person they could be mourning).

  • A dried plant or flower once used in folk medicine (mugwort, forget-me-not, or dogwood bark preferred).

  • A shallow dish of soil mixed with ash (ideally from a place that burned).

Yokai Description:
Describe your yokai’s appearance, demeanor, behavior, and personality. Feel free to include alignment or role in the world.

[!] The information is given by elders who claim to have seen him. It may be incorrect? [!]

His body is a contradiction. Charred skin blooming with patches of moss and flowers; long black hair with braids made of scorched vines. His voice smells faintly of wet earth and smoke. When he walks, the ground behind him may blacken or bloom. The man stood tall, perhaps reaching slightly over 7 feet. His body was mostly muscle, but as you looked closer, chunks of him seemed to be missing. Any skin visible was wrapped in warm white cloth. His Yukata was burned with little pieces left. A straw hat on his head with red ribbons attached. The male had warmth emitting from him, although when near, your heart felt like it dropped. It's unsettling- unsafe. The human brain knows something is wrong, but you aren’t sure why. He has two forms, one a statue made of stone. Sometimes he can replace an ancient statue that was made for him by the villagers. His statue over time has moss and cracks. Although for some reason, it felt he liked it that way… his body never got to return to the earth from which his life came.

{!} It seems hes taken form as an Oni Yokai.{!}

His personality seems to be very different depending on who he interacts with. A soul who knows their place within the living world may be given solitude. But one of anger and trauma may fall victim to him. He's not cruel, he's [Redacted]

Do you understand that with acceptance, your spirit is forever at risk of SOUL-DEATH?
While an extreme punishment, the faction lead may revoke your spirit character with valid reasoning.

I understand mine and any spirit is forever at risk
! DUH !
Please provide proof of your eligibility for a spirit role.
For example, a death certificate, “Trusted Player” tag, Lore Team, or an Admin ran
