GENERAL INFORMATIONS:
Yokai Type & Lore:
ISONADE (Translates into ‘Beach Stroker’) with alternative name of ‘ōkuchi Wani’Yokai Type & Lore:
The Isonade Yokai originated from West Japan (claimed to have started in the region of Matsuura), and is thought to be some sort of a shark-like sea monster, with very shark-like features, but with the difference of their fins having lots of metal-like barbs which they use to snag into their prey and pull them under the water with.. The Isonade is believed to turn coastal waters and shallow parts of the sea as their habitat, of which they usually look for boats to capsize and/or fishermens to snatch. They are inherently carnivorous and would eat like any other sharks do, but unlike sharks, would go out of their way to snatch people for consumption. The Isonade is also said to appear when the north winds blow and when the sea current changes.
In my interpretation, I plan to interpret the Isonade as a Yokai with more natural marine animalistic behaviors but still keeping its original destructive force nature, while keeping the size relatively big acclaimed size of 35 ft long or roughly 10 meters long. It will inhibit natural shark behavior except its way of feeding, which will be true to how they are said to hunt, apart from that for a little shock value, I plan to combine other species of sharks’s ability into it such as Bull Shark’s tolerance of Freshwater, allowing the Isonade to traverse into the river mouth and up rivers for a limited amount of time.
The Isonade will however will also have a neutered diet as to not make it overly preferring to eat humans, It will keep itself fed with sea animals, but occasionally if an unfortunate human decides to venture too far out to the bay, they are at risk of encountering the yokai, and depending on their general outlook and behavior when it comes to the Ocean, they will either be spared or snatched. And the way the Isonade snatches its victim will stay true to its believed preferred method, being smart enough to silently swim through waters without even breaking surface or causing water splash, and for eerie effects, It will be able to swim still in water and still breathes much like sharks that has a different way of breathing other than ram ventilation, similar to some shark species and also another mythological shark cryptids.
Further adding to my interpretation of the Yokai, the Isonade are able to swim in circles at incredible speed and can cause a sea-vortex to form, potentially capsizing a boat or sucking any unfortunate individual straight underwater. It uses this to capsize boats who's sailors or captain is considered to have bad omen/karma to the ocean, showcasing it's destructive side of the Yokai.
As for whether it's Malevolent or Benevolent, the Isonade is considered Neutral but highly destructive as it only devours individuals who are deemed destructive to the ocean, and would usually just act like a regular coastal hunting shark. However it can still destroy boats or capsize it.
List of notable behaviors and attributes:
- Highly Elusive
- Carnivorous
- Hybrid of multiple shark species
- Massive but isn't too big to exist in the modern ocean.
- A Purely physical form of Yokai
Strengths & Weaknesses:
While considered a Yokai, the Isonade is relatively grounded to how their ability works, It does not have any direct supernatural powers, but possesses heightened physical ability that seems supernaturalistic, such as its insane swim speed while also being virtually undetectable when doing so, It can also cause vortex to form by swimming in circles at great speed. However I will list it’s abilities and weaknesses below:
Strengths:
- Blistering swim speed and being able to do so without breaking the surface or causing splash.
- Able to traverse through Sea, Brackish, and Freshwaters. (Though limited time on Freshwaters due to its size difference compared to potential prey)
- Can cause dangerous water vortexes in the ocean by swimming in circles at incredible speed.
- Being able to stay still in the water and still breathes (inherited ability from sharks that breathes by Buccal Pumping)
Weakness:
- Susceptible to physical weaponry and can be accidentally hooked on by fishing rods (but good luck trying to reel it in)
- Is unable to go on land (duh)
- Susceptible to getting beached.
- Sometimes leaves animal carcasses to wash-up on shore, making its existence easier to speculate or easier to track it down.
- It does not harbor any magical or supernatural curses or anything like that.
Soul-Death Mechanics:
The Isonade is simply a kill-able physical form type of Yokai, if you want to get rid of it, you need to, first manage to find it, and two… get it to fight you, and three… somehow find a way to kill it quickly before it swims away. Alternatively, beaching it or making it starve to death is an option.
However the Isonade will mostly remain close to the bottom of the Bay Area, making it harder and more elusive to find. All-in-All it is most likely the easiest to kill Yokai, however it's also the hardest to find or summon.
Curse & Blessing Methods
Since the Yokai itself is more grounded in reality, I have to take creative liberty to this section, as for how the Isonade can know if someone needs to be given a Blessing or a Curse, it will usually starts with stalking the individual by being still, observing them from the depths, and in a way they can sense the Karma of the individual.
Blessing:
- Welcomed Guest of the Sea (Safe)
Obtainment: Individuals can obtain this blessing by having a good karma towards the Ocean, helping animals, cleaning rivers from trash, and generally respecting the ocean and considering the ocean as sacred.
NOTE: Individuals can get this blessing revoked if they continuously commit actions that’s considered as harming the ocean or being generally disrespectful.
Curse:
- Blood in the water (Danger)
Obtainment: Individuals can obtain this curse by having a bad karma towards the Ocean, injuring sea animals, littering in rivers or ocean, or generally disrespecting the ocean may lead to the individuals getting this curse.
Cleansing/Repelling: Individuals can cleanse themselves from this curse by giving offering to the Isonade in the form of improving their karma, however this may not be a guaranteed, but alternatively if the Individual managed to find a shedding of the Isonade’s teeth, they may keep it on them and hold it as they go into bodies of waters to keep the Isonade at bay. (Mind you there is no supernatural or physical barrier that's keeping the Isonade from eating an individual with a tooth, see lore section.)
NOTE: By default the Isonade considers anyone neutral until deciding whether or not they are blessed or cursed, individuals with neutral status to the Ocean may get stalked by the Isonade during the period of their stay in the waters, and sometimes the Isonade would take an interest and started circling the individual like a shark would.
Warding & Invoking Methods
The Isonade can be warded off or even be stopped from eating an individual if the individual had gotten personal prayers from a shrine maiden, and alternatively every individuals who have never interacted with the ocean in a harmful way or a friendly way, will automatically be considered as pristine, and therefor the Isonade will not attempt to snatch them. But for those unlucky people who are cursed by the Isonade, they can ward the isonade off by keeping a shedding of its teeth, much like normal sharks they shed their teeth every now and then, however the Isonade does this much less often, making it rarer than winning the lottery.
As for summoning, the Isonade exists constantly, however it is incredibly elusive and seeing one directly would be pretty rare, However it is said that the Isonade would go up from the shallows during storms or foggy days, and some say.. If you bring a food offering (be it from medium sized to large mammals), You might be able to see it snatch the offering and drag it down from the surface.

The Isonade is often described as a Giant shark-like sea monster, however most interpretation shows it having an interesting look of having an unusual shaped tail and double backfin, Its fins also covered in metal-like barbs that it uses to snag prey and pull them to deeper waters before devouring them. The Isonade, while being incredibly big, is also highly elusive, much like sharks do; they are mostly shy, but it will stay on shallow waters and in this interpretation attempt to swim into brackish or up river into lakes for a limited amount of time.
This particular Isonade interpretation sets it at the length of 35 ft (10 meters), making it significantly larger than even the largest recorded Great White Shark specimen, and impressively makes it closer to other acclaimed shark mythos such as the 'Submarine' myth and the 'Black Demon' myth. However this Isonade unlike regular sharks or other shark cryptids, Is a fairly smart Yokai despite being... a shark. So much so that if you remember the technique that can be used to 'ward it off' which was keeping one of its tooth shedding, Its actually a lie... the Yokai knows that there is no physical or supernatural barrier that would prevent it from eating a cursed person who's holding one of its tooth, It simply doesn't eat them to give them a fair chance at redemption.
However the Isonade is not without destructive capability, as it is believed to sometimes cause sea vortexes to form by swimming around in circles at incredible speeds, and causing boats to get capsized, It will also (in this interpretation), decides if an individual is worthy of being snatched and devoured based on their history with treatment of the ocean, If the individual is known to cause harm to the Ocean (throwing trashes into the ocean, etc.) It will curse them to be a worthy meal, and if the individual set foot into waters deeper than they can stand in, the Isonade will quickly rush to its location like it smelled blood in the water, and with its highly elusive reputation of being able to swim at incredible speed without breaking surface or cause splashes, it can only take a second before you notice it nearby, or even more eerily, if the individual were to look underwater, they may catch it swimming still in place at the bottom of the ocean looking at the individual, stalking it and being patient until the individual either gets out or stays in long enough that it decides to snatch the individual. Making this Yokai almost like a pseudo-guardian of the sea, though it is susceptible to weaknesses that any mortal aquatic marine can face, such as getting beached, killed with physical weaponry, and sometimes even snagging on a fisherman’s hook, however it is unlikely anyone can pull it in without proper fishing equipment.
The diet of the Isonade remains unknown but it is believed to be a regular big carnivore, almost apex predator-like as evidently people believed the reason bigger sharks or whales being found devoured and washed up ashore is the handiwork of the Isonade, however it will not eat as it pleases as despite its size and shark-like behavior, its main purpose is to maintain balance in the sea of Japan. And wouldn’t necessarily stay in one area at a time. It will travel to many places, and sometimes only appear when the north wind blows or when the ocean current changes.
If to be in an alignment, the Isonade will fit a Benevolent but Destructive alignment, as it is behaviorally an ocean predator living in the ocean, but with the added responsibility of keeping the Ocean clean from harmful individuals and keeping the ecosystem balanced, however it does not make it completely friendly as it can consider harmful individuals as an imbalance in the ocean. And it also have a destructive force capability, being able and sometimes willingly capsize boats and devouring everyone on board when they fell overboard, however it only do so towards sailors or captains with bad karma.
