Rumors all throughout history can never be pinpoint accurate, but the consensus has always remained. The Yūyami-no-Kami is said to contain universes, galaxies behind her eyes. She can see creatures wandering long after they’ve passed and moved on. Though she cannot bring them back, she can make them feel as if they’ve never left. The hollowness felt when missing a loved one has gone missing itself.
Tales of a great beast have fluttered about, drawing fear from the island folk. The rumor dates back to a famine, leaving the soil and crops of the land tainted. The origins are unknown, but their solutions had weighed thin. They gathered at the center of the forest, hoping they’d find a sapling, a seed… With no luck, the island folk returned to their homes.
The soil was no longer usable, and crops started to die. The trees were no longer sprouting leaves. The people were running out of food.
The island folk felt the spirit of the island had abandoned them and left them for dead. Their guilt and remorse for their home weighed heavily. An offering bell was made, crafted entirely of bone.
The people gathered their dearest belongings, most of deep sentimental value, and brought them forth for the kami. This was later followed by the island folk throwing themselves into strenuous physical labor in hopes of saving their home.
Only then did the forest breathe once again.
At the base of the tree with the final leaf in the forest, a white-tailed deer drew its final breath and an owl carried her soul to rest. This is when Yūyami-no-Kami finally took form.
Although she was too mighty to clearly see, her presence rendered a sense of comfort in the people. They recall her great antlers and the feathers of her wings, she was beautiful.
She was statuesque.
She stood silent. Then, she took her leave, quietly stepping into the forest.
The trees finally sprouted and bloomed, the soil no longer dry. Her grass stood tall and flowed in the cold, cold air.
As years wore on, tales changed. Some said the Kami ferried lost souls through its forest when they died alone. Others said it guided monks in dreams toward enlightenment. And some claim that if you wept beneath a tree, you would awaken with your heart lighter, your memory softer.
But all agreed on one thing:
Yūyami-no-Kami does not speak. She listens.
And if the world grows too loud, she fades back into mist— waiting until stillness returns.
So today, deep in her domain, hidden from all but ones who tread carefully, there is still a path worn smooth by spirits and time. Step gently. Breathe softly. And if you hear a bell ring with no wind to stir it—
Bow.

STRENGTHS:
I. Yūyami-no-Kami can walk freely with no sound or footprint, allowing her to slip between realms– mortal, spiritual, or dreams. When in her physical form, mortals glancing her way will always feel as if they’ve forgotten something, unable to recall her features.
II. Her body is the forest– Her roots can weave themselves to her liking, her branches can reach great heights, and her forest companions are her eyes and ears.

WEAKNESSES:
I. Though she is a god, she thrives in silence. Abrupt and booming volumes cause her to grow agitated and vanish. This can temporarily disrupt her, a bold distraction of ones choice. Her realm grows weak for a moment.
II. She is bound by her own name, which can cause her to be invoked involuntarily. This does result in dire consequence.

As a Kami, she comes with great power and responsibility. The spirits of a lesser tier are always at risk of exorcism, banishment, or being devoured. They cannot be killed in ways mortals consider conventional.
Most are required proper permission before devouring a soul or spirit, but special exceptions can be made for Kami or Elder spirits with sufficient reasoning and approval; such as events, destruction of shrine property, and others deemed acceptable by Staff or Lore team.

I. Divine Form - Twilight in Flesh
Yūyami-no-Kami scarcely reveals her true form to mortals. Legends of the past are still a little fuzzy with details, unable to recall if she had multiple limbs or if her feathers created a mirage. Her face was unmistakably reminiscent of an owl’s, with enormous eyes resembling the phases of the moon. No mortal could gaze directly into them and recall the lifetimes they’d see, but they’d feel as if a millennium had passed.
Her back was riddled with dark, ashy feathers; occasionally, she’d had a few white feathers peppering into her wings. One would be greatly blessed to have a stray of hers fall into their hands. Historians were able to recover tales detailing her antlers; their ivory glow twisting and curling, merging into the skull of the owl, and the spine of the beast.
In this form, she makes no sound. She only watches. And each second under her microscope feels like hours.
II. Camouflage - Veil of Creatures
The forest is a sanctuary for creatures of the physical and the spiritual realm. Those under her care act as her eyes and ears when she is nowhere to be seen.
The hills have eyes… so do the trees, and the bugs, the woodland animals, and the stars in the night sky. It’s evident her presence is nearby when the animals are too silent, too still– It’s almost as if they’re too knowing for their own good, only for things to return to normal once acknowledged.
Do not worry about being alone in the forest, for you never truly are.
