Yuki-Onna | Yukinomiya ้ชๅฎฎ
The Gentle Yokai.
Description: A young woman seemingly frozen with pale, frosted skin, snow-white eyelashes. Always wearing a thin ensemble with her raven black hair tied in a traditional style ponytail with a red ribbon. She is seemingly in a permanent state of sorrow.
APPROACHABLE | SAFE
Yukinomiya Shrine | Location & Information
Found within the Mountains of Byakuyakoku, past the bridge of the station, a smaller shrine can be found, built by the Shrine workers themselves after coming of the fateful story of Hana. Believing that the grieving Yurei embedded within the snow has caused the eternal winter that affects only the Byakuyakoku mountains. Seen as not only her final resting place, but a memorial to the beloved mother and her child.
Some may even say they have spotted the longing mother searching for the spirit of her child within the Yukinomiya Shrine. Wandering as a beautiful young woman, only recognized as a yurei by the lack of footprints she leaves within the snow, or the distinct frosted appearance she adorns, forever frozen.
Most seen by children, Yuki-Onna (Hana) is said to guide lost children back to the warmth of the shrine with a motherly kindness, despite her distinct tears that forever flow.

Born of Winter, Loss and love. Within Yukinomiya, a lost Yurei. The Yuki-Onna. Grief can drive anyone to do incredible acts of love, such as this Yokai.
All across Japan, there have been multiple sightings, stories and theories of the many Yuki-Onna that wander, however Norowarejima carries the most tragic of them all. A lost mother grieving over her beloved child.
Centuries ago recounts the story of a beloved woman within the small village of Byakuyakoku* by the name of Hana. A beloved woman known for her kindness and beauty, blessed with her own dearest child. Born of snow, the small child received the name of Mafuyu.
The winters of Norowartejima were harsh and unforgiving, however Hana and her beloved Mafuyu thrived within the chilling cold. Gathering materials such as firewood or food like the fish found within the streams. However, one fateful evening, all was lost.

โMafuyu? Mafuyu dear? Come to mother!"
The young mother cried out, muffled by the incredible cyclone that had emerged within the snowy mountains. As white as the snow around her, Hanaโs thin Yukata tore the woman around as if she were strengthless, though she powered through, desperate to see her beloved child.
ใ็ๅฌ๏ผใ้กใ, ใ้กใใ ใใ๏ผใ
โMafuyu! Please, I beg of you!โ
The shrill cries as her lungs filled with frost were painful, weakening the desperate woman as she longed for her child, pulling her way through the gusts of powerful wind, the warmth of her heart bearing through the sheer cold of her beloved winter. Tears soon began to stream down her soft, pale cheeks, solidifying to icicles that soon shattered into frost.

Loss.
A motherโs greatest fear. The loss of a child, the small, feeble body of such a sweet child rests dormant on the snow, her skin an icy blue. Mafuyu were always considered quite beautiful, even when her heart no longer beats the same. The once red Haori the child wore, now a faded pink as frost began to build and her eyes a faded grey. However the child rests peacefully, as if tucked into a cozy futon, finding comfort in even the most dire of situations, one that leads to her demise.
Hana spoke no further words, no cries of worry, pain or fear. Rather, the mother approached the resting body of her deceased child, lowered herself to the building snow and embraced her child for one last act of love. Soon overcome by the frost as tears run down the motherโs face.
A final reunion.
