An unspoken bond shared between the delicate bunny and her beloved Crow, the two newest additions to the Kemori friends, Shukurimu-San, the creampuff bunny and Koro-Kun the Devoted crow shocks the island of Norowarejima with not only their sweet charms, but their even sweeter love!

Appearing on the Newest Episode of Kemori Friends; "Something Sweeter than Chocolate", the pairing made their debut as the episode recounts their day adventuring through the town of Norowarejima, buying gift after gift to please one another before finally finishing on a humble set of sweet white chocolate they had each made for each other . . .​

Before I get into the meat of my submission, I just wanted to thank you guys for holding this contest. I had desperately needed a creative project, and this was the perfect excuse. So thank you, and I hope you enjoy my submission.

Kemori Friends: Something Sweeter Than Chocolate​

Speculative script, with accompanying mini musical suite​

For my submission, I have decided to write a small screenplay outlining my interpretation of how the Something Sweeter Than Chocolate episode may play out. I have also composed a small mini-suite of chamber music (plus one piece for piano) for how I think a portion of the episode's score would sound like. I really hope you enjoy my interpretation of the episode, along with the music.

Below is my original music for the accompanying speculative script. I will also post a small breakdown of each track, as well as where each track would be placed if you wish to listen as you read. You may, of course, listen to the score independently if you wish.

1. Opening Theme​

The opening theme was such a blast to write! It is written for a small chamber orchestra. I did my best to try and capture the joy and energy from children's anime from the 80s and 90s (Astro Boy, Tonari no Totoro, Anpanman). Naturally, this is placed at the top of the 2nd page (1st past the title page) at the line:
"The main theme to Kemori Friends plays!"

2. Koro-kun​

This little piece establishes Koro-kun's leitmotif. Koro-kun himself is represented by the oboe and is accompanied by brass and xylophone. This would be placed at the top of the 3rd page (marked as page 2) at the line:
"The camera focuses on Koro-kun."

3. Shuukurimu-san​

This sleepy little piece establishes Shuukurimu-san's leitmotif. In this, she is represented by the French horn, and accompanied by woodwinds and harp. I thought it would be thematically appropriate to have Koro-kun be represented by a woodwind and accompanied by brass, whilst Shuukurimu-san is represented by a brass instrument and accompanied by woodwinds. This piece would be placed near the top of page 4 (marked as the 3rd page) next to the line:
"Shuukurimu-san splits off from Koro-kun."​

4. White Day Waltz​

This waltz is inspired by waltzes of the Romantic era (Chopin, Strauss, Liszt), with a harmonic progression that is relatively common in J-pop and City Pop, which I hoped would lend it a quality that would be reminiscent of Joe Hisaishi. This piece is written for both oboe and French horn, accompanied by string quartet. Both Koro-kun's and Shuukurimu-san's leitmotifs are utilised in this piece - first as standalone melodies, then contrapuntally, where they harmonise with one another. This is placed at the centre of the 6th page (marked page 5) at the line:
"They perform a waltz along with the music."​

5. Waltz Reprise​

A short reprise of the waltz, played between Koro-kun and Shuukurimu-san. Shuukurimu-san, on the cello, starts by playing Koro-kun's leitmotif. Koro-kun, on violin, responds with her leitmotif. They then finish the reprise by playing in harmony. Though a segment of the previous piece, I do think this best represents the love between them (at least my interpretation of it). This is placed at the very bottom of page 6 (marked page 5) at the line:
"Shuukurimu-san plays a part of the waltz from earlier on the cello."​

6. Ending Theme​

While the other pieces were mockups taken straight from my music notation software, I enlisted the help of a pianist (the fabulous William Harvey) friend to play this live. I had hoped a more laidback, swung piece would be a great way to wind down at the end of an episode, and having it played live was the cherry on top. Naturally, this is placed at the very end of the script at the line:
"Credits roll."​

Summary:
Today is White Day! After having her chocolates accepted by Koro-Senpai, Shukurimu was eager to be able to get a similar gift in return. But a turn in the hallway caused Shukurimu to spot Koro-Senpai… talking to another girl?! Not to mention, he has a gift bag with a white lacy ribbon!!

Heartbroken, Shukurimu’s White Day ends up a nightmare!! But perhaps a miracle could save the spark kindling between the two highschoolers?

WAAAAHHH I KNOW IM LATE BUT I PROCRASTINATED anyway hi!! I just started getting into Kyuuchan Adventures and when I saw Shumuriku-San and Koro-Kun's debut, I fell in LOVE immediately!! So I hope to convey that love with a fanfic about them for White Day! I hope you enjoy!!

Shukurimu first met Koro-Senpai in the library. A very normal place, for a very normal first-meeting. But to Shukurimu, it was the first time her usually monochrome world filled with color. Ever since then, Koro-Senpai appeared in her vision almost everyday.

In the canteen, by the schoolgates, even passing by her classroom window… It’s a wonder how Shukurimu never noticed him before. It’s much more of a wonder, how the two began to form a friendship as well despite their different lives (where Koro-Senpai is the captain of the track team, and Shukurimu is the Vice-President of the Literature Club). Perhaps it’s a given, as she tends to keep to herself with only a few friends like Kyuu-Chan not minding her constant silence.

Speaking of… the calico-haired girl had been the one to further encourage Shukurimu to explore her growing feelings for the raven-haired senior. In fact, Kyuu-Chan had dragged Shukurimu back to her house to make handmade chocolates for Valentine’s Day.

Did it look the best? No. But did it taste good? Somehow!

With handmade chocolate boxed in a heart container, Shukurimu had found Koro-Senpai on the day of Love and thrusted the gift at him with a red face.

And… he accepted!

Her heart had been beating so loudly in her eyes, her face red and hot against her pale complexion she might have passed out.. And Koro-Senpai accepted her affections. Given, nothing much changed between their friendship after that day. But there was something going on… A spark, Kyuu-Chan helpfully supplied.

Shukurimu decided to do absolutely nothing about it, waiting for Koro-Senpai to make his next move. White Day was the perfect opportunity to do so.

Too bad, it ended up turning into her worst nightmare.

“Ah, Shukurimu-san? Could you help me send these library books over to the club room?”

Shukurimu nodded, taking the books from the table set aside by her teacher. Even though she did not speak, the teacher still gladly thanked her for what is supposed to be a normal job for the vice-president. Sometimes, Shukurimu does not get it.

Stepping into the hallway, Shukurimu noted that there was still some time before homeroom. Some students were mingling about, but the hallways were not crowded. Although Shukurimu likes to take the longer way to the club room (just for the reason that there’s hardly any people), she decided to take the shortest route.

Her school shoes hit the floor in a silent pattering of steps, white curls bouncing behind her in a fluffy heap. Some heads turned, eyes lingering on her appearance which Shukurimu paid no mind to.

Just as she turned a corner, she found herself halting in place.

Ahead of her, in front of another junior classroom, was Koro-senpai.

Talking to another girl.

With a bag in hand.

A White. Lacy. Ribbon. Tied to it.

Shukurimu nearly dropped the library books right there and then from the shock that went through her veins. Before she could be found out, she slipped back and away from eyesight, back pressed against the wall. Clutching the book pile closer to her, Shukurimu felt her heart beating rapidly once more. But instead of the shy nervousness associated from last month, this time, it was filled with dread.

Could it be?... Koro-senpai had not been interested in her at all?

Shukurimu’s arm ached from holding the books up. Using that moment to escape, she walked back to where she came from, wishing she had taken the original route instead.

It was natural that during lunch break, Kyuu-Chan would catch on to Shukurimu’s internal turmoil.

“You’re joking.” Kyuu-Chan would say, her jaw dropping when Shukurimu quietly retold the events from earlier in the morning. The classroom was empty, save for the two of them with their bentos on their connected desks. A prime time for some juicy gossip!

Shukurimu sadly shook her head, a frown tugging on her lips. “I must have lost my chance… Even though I gave him chocolates from Valentine’s Day, I did not initiate. He must think of me as some kind of fool…”

“Nooonsense!” The ever optimistic calico-haired girl rejected that notion. She flicked Shukurimu’s forehead, a huff on her lips. “He practically has heart eyes every time I see you with him! You don’t even notice him staring at you during our hangouts when it’s clear I’m the third wheel!”

Pink eyes gently blinked. “But, we were all spending time together as friends-”

“And I STILL became the third wheel-! Okay, the point is! That crow has feelings for you! I can see it! SMELL IT!”

Shukurimu weakly laughed, though her frown still remained. “But what of that girl?...”

Kyuu-Chan groaned. Shukurimu, practically the sweetest girl in school, worrying about some nobody fighting for Koro’s heart. As ridiculous as it sounds, Kyuu-Chan did find it saddening to see how Shukurimu easily thought that she had no chance with Koro…

Suddenly, Kyuu-Chan stood up, slamming her hand down on the table!

“Don’t worry, my dear friend, Kyuu-Chan will fix this!”

Before Shukurimu could even ask what she was going to do, the girl had already ran out of the classroom in a haste, a mission clearly etched in her mind.

Eyes turned back down on the table, seeing Kyuu-Chan’s opened bento box with leftovers. She softly sighed, deciding to not spend anymore time thinking about it and went to clean up their mess.

The school bell rings, indicating the end of school. Strangely enough, Kyuu-Chan never came back to class. But it was by no surprise to the teachers nor classmates- Kyuu-Chan just sometimes ditches class for one reason or another.

Shukurimu softly sighed to herself, packing her belongings into her school bag as she mulled of the disappointing day, when suddenly, a voice cut through the air.

“SHUKURIMU-SAN- Oh great, you’re still here!”

Kyuu-Chan barged into the classroom, surprising not just Shukurimu but the students that were still there. Her friend’s uniform attire had dirtied, brown spots staining the white. But before Shukurimu could ask, her friend suddenly grabbed her by the wrist, and began to run, forcing Shukurimu to follow her!

“W-Where are we going-?!”

“You’ll see!”

Based on the route they were taking, Shukurimu could tell they were heading for the rooftops. But why? Why so sudden? And why is Kyuu-Chan in such a hurry-

The door to the rooftop slammed open, causing Shukurimu to jump from the noise. But Kyuu-Chan continued to drag her further into the rooftops, before suddenly stopping.

“Okay,I’ve done my part, goodluck!”

“Wuh- Kyuu-Chan?!-”

Just as fast as she had appeared and dragged her away, Kyuu-Chan had left her all alone. Such a curious behavior.

Shukurimu patted down her skirt and blazer, the run having messed up her prim and proper attire. But for the second time that day, another voice spoke.

“Hey.”

A simple greeting, but Shukurimu paused in her movements, not daring to turn around. That was.. Why was he here?

.. Could it be-?

“Ya know, I think it’s- um- easier to do this if I can see you-”

Koro-senpai’s voice never fails to make Shukurimu’s cheeks turn pink. Soothing and gentle… How could she ever deny his request when he said it so earnestly? Despite fearing for the worst case scenario, the younger highschooler mustered her courage and slowly turned. But her eyes remained shut, as if afraid to face her senior properly.

A cool hand cupped her cheek, and Shukurimu squeaked as her eyes shot wide. Koro-Senpai was standing right in front of her, a dumb but fond grin on his face. Captivated by his obsidion eyes, Shukurimu nearly did not notice the painfully familiar bag with its white ribbon.

It seems that Koro-Senpai knew what she was thinking, as he hurriedly explained.

“A friend of a friend asked me to do a fetch-quest for him… I’m sorry I made you think I didn’t reciprocate your feelings. Your friend Kyuu-Chan is pretty scary when she gets mad~” Despite the easy-going tone he had, there was a slight tremor of nervousness. He wasn’t done speaking, apparently, as he continued on.

“In an unlucky turn of events, the chocolates I made for you were forgotten at home.. But Kyuu-Chan dragged me to the school kitchen and helped me make some.”

Shukurimu slowly took the bag from him, as Koro slipped his hand back from where it was cupping her cheek. She peered inside, spotting a package wrapped in another ribbon, this time the colors resembling baby blue and white to celebrate the day.

“It’s… for me?” She would ask, her voice too soft that nobody could have picked it up. But Koro was close enough to hear it.

“For you.” He confirmed. “.. It’s my answer, by the way, though I thought I made it pretty obvious?”

“Wuh?”

“Hanging out together, how I always buy you small gifts and pay for the food?”

“W-Wuh?!? You wouldn’t allow me to give you money… so I ended up buying gifts for you in retaliation and-”

Shukurimu suddenly stopped, her cheeks a deep shade of red as it dawned on her what it may have looked like for bystanders. Did their hangouts look like dates?!

Koro laughed out loud. “Don’t think about it too much, Shukurimu-San. If anything.. I enjoyed spending the past month with you. Friends, not friends.. Doesn’t matter. Being able to spend time with you, Shukurimu-San, has been the best days of my life.”

Such declarations seemingly felt exaggerated, but Shukurimu thought back to the days they spent time with each other. After school, during the weekends… Sometimes with Kyuu-Chan, other times just the two of them.

It’s not like they did anything extravagant or expensive, either. Mostly window-shopping, or going to the parks.. Indulging in a cafe or visiting an arcade.. Where all they did was spend each moment together.

Thinking about it now, Shukurimu understood what Koro meant. For she felt the same way.

“I- Koro-Senpa-”
“Shukurimu-Sa-”

The two of them stopped when their voices overlapped, before delving into soft giggles. Koro made a gesture for Shukurimu to go first.

“I’m.. I don’t know really know what I’m meant to do now, haha… oh, my cheeks feels so hot…”

Koro smiled softly, nodding. “Yea, I can see it.”

“You-!”

A hand lightly slapping on the other’s chest, and another moment of laughter shared between them. Unbeknownst to Shukurimu, the two had gotten much closer, nearly chest to chest. Huh, when did that happen?

Her breath hitched when one of Koro’s hands took Shukurimu’s, their fingers lacing together. His other hand raised to cup her cheek once more. Their faces are so close.

“Can I kiss you?”

Such a simple question, yet Shukurimu cannot find it in herself to speak. So, she nodded.

She shut her eyes tightly, a few seconds only passing before another pair of lips pressed against her in a soft peck.

It wasn’t even a full on ‘kiss’ that’s often described more… intimately in the literature books she read for the club. This one was more of a press, just for a moment or two before Koro pulled away. But it took her breath all the same, for she had just given her first kiss to her first crush. She can hear her heartbeat against her ears.

“Was that okay?.. Sorry, that was my first kiss.”

Koro, the well-known track captain of their school who was confident and devoted to his team… was behaving all shy and nervous with Shukurimu still in his arms. A light giggle escaped the girl’s lips, then. In a fit of confidence, she raised her hand to boop his nose.

“It was nice.. And it was my first kiss, too~”

“.. Oh!”

With the knowledge of each other being their first kiss’, the two became a bit more shy. They unlatched from each other, though they ended up holding hands.

“Well-” Koro coughed. “Do you want to go on a date with me? There’s probably a White Day sale going on in that one cafe we went to.”

Shukurimu’s eyes widened with interest. “Ah! The one with the buttery croissants? I love that place!”

“Yea? Never would have thought.”

They began walking hand in hand towards the rooftop door, their shared laughter dancing along the wind as a new chapter begins in their life.

EXTREMELY LATE WHITE DAY CONTEST SUBMISSION!? Ik its suppose to be Shukurimu-san and Koro-kun, but I didn't have enough time sadly due to school to finish Koro's model so I just used Kyuuchan as replacement, im sorry </3 Regardless I hope it still looks nice even if it doesn't win or anything. :3
